This short history, chronicling the first 30 years of the world

famous FIFTY NINE CLUB® for young motorcyclists, is the

very personal account by Mike 'Cowboy' Cook, the only

person actually there for practically the whole of the period.

Joining as an ordinary member sometime in 1963 when the

Club was only a few months old, he quickly became involved in

helping to run things. By the time the Club was formed into a

limited company (registered as a charity) in 1965, he was so

involved that he was asked to join the Council of Management.

Three years later after training as a youth and community

worker, he returned to the Club as a fulltime leader. In 1971,

with help from voluntary leaders, he was left to manage the

Club on his own for the following 21 years, until

circumstances brought about his redundancy in 1992.

Once again the wonders of modern technology let us down. The Internet, the Electronic Super-Highway, the gateway to all the information a man or woman (or 59 Club Member) could ever wish for, all worth nothing if the main computer server dies.

Once more your favourite club found itself at the mercy of the WorldWideWeb of bugs and gremlins.

What can we say? It took a LOT of phone calls, a LOT of emails, a LOT of Blood, Sweat and Tears (Well, maybe not that much actual BLOOD, but ...) to get the problem sorted but we are back now and hoping to avoid a repetition in future.

Please accept our apologies and our thanks for staying loyal to us. Check out the date of the 59 Club Day at The Ace and come and let us thank you in person

The 59 Club Charity Appeal

Kiddimoto and Riders for Health have joined forces to raise £10,000 for a special appeal to provide motorcycles for health teams in Africa to travel over inhospitable terrain in the fight against such terrible diseases as bubonic plague, still rife out there.

Troy Corser and many leading figures from British Super Bikes, World Super Bikes, MotoGP and MotoX teams are involved.

Look out for the fundraising charts at The 59 Club Hospitality Tent at Brighton on the 10th September where we will be taking part in The Ace Café Reunion Run

Just £1 per entry in a simple competition will help the appeal and YOU have the chance to win a fabulous Kiddimoto bike!

We raised over £110.00 at Brighton

Many, many thanks to everyone who gave so generously.

We will post the name of the Kiddimoto bike winner as soon as it is announced

For more details check out the Riders for Health and Kiddimoto websites

FRAGMENT FILMS

PATHÉ NEWSREEL films – the ‘59 CLUB’ 1962

IN SEARCH OF ‘RAY ANTON’

The research team for the popular Anglia and London ITV archive film series, ‘The Way We Were’ are keen to track down Ray Anton who featured in some Pathé newsreel related to the 59 Club – perhaps you can help….

In 1962 popstar wanabee – window cleaner  Ray Anton performed ‘As if I Cared’ to a packed audience in the 59 Club in Hackney. Do you know if RAY ANTON (possibly his stage name) is still around? – do you remember him at all?

Also

In 1967 a film was made of the VOLUNTEER EMERGENCY SERVICE (VES) and featured in particular a young biker called TONY ROPER.

At the start of the film is a young man answering the telephone – again, if you know of Tony’s whereabouts or the chap on the phone or anyone involved in the VES at that time and can help with any information about the Service which operated then – please get in touch with either the 59 Club’s John Ryan through the usual email address or the series researcher:

Thanks to some excellent detective work, Jane has now contacted Tony Roper. Thanks to everyone who offered their help.

We have been putting together a montage of photographs from the early days of The 59 Club and leading towards the present day. You can look at some of these if you click on the new link on The Menu Page of this website. The pictures are in no particular order but we hope they will bring back memories and give everyone a taste of how things were. Have a look and see if you recognise yourself or friends. And if YOU have any pictures you would like to see on the site, please send them in to us. More pages and pics added 29th.

A new, downloadable version of the membership application form has been added to the relevant page. This will open directly in Microsoft Word or Microsoft Office Word Viewer if you have them on your computer and will be far easier to print off.

Three news items today. Classic Bike Magazine are preparing a new website which is going 'live' in August. They are going to link to the good old 59 Club and we have added a link to them on our marketplace page. At the moment it goes to their old website but will switch the moment the new one goes online.

We just received a poem from one of our contributors in the USA. Have a look at the Jokes pages (Page 2) and see what you think. Maybe we should start a poetry competition?

And finally we have a picture sent in from Australia of a beautifully restored Triton. Check out the Reader's Pics page.
